San Antonio based USAA is paying the full tab for the Air Force Academy football team to travel to Annapolis Maryland Saturday, preventing the government shutdown from cancelling the Air Force-Navy football game, 1200 WOAI news reports.
USAA caters to military customers, and is a sponsor of college football broadcasts.
USAA is writing a check for $230,000, Air Force Academy Athletic Director Derm Coll told USA Today.
The Department of Defense had warned that service academy football games and other sports were going to be cancelled due to the government shutdown.
Coll told USA Today he was expecting USAA to help pay for the game, but he never expected the San Antonio based insurance and financial services company to fork over the full amount.
USAA is also the major sponsor of the annual Army Navy game.
