San Antonio is one of twenty places worldwide nominated in USA Today's Readers Choice Awards as the best tourism destination for teenagers, 1200 WOAI news reports.
San Antonio is up against some heavy hitters, including London, New York City, Oahu, and outdoor destinations like the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador, Paradise Island in the Bahamas, and Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming.
Casandra Matej, who heads the San Antonio Convention and Visitors Bureau, says recognition as being a good destination for picky and restless teenagers is a feather in the city's cap.
"There's restaurants that are friendly, our attractions, of course, the thrill rides at Fiesta Texas and Sea World."
She says being known as a top destination for teens will convince more families to come here, knowing that the city is not 'stodgy.' She says this is the perfect time for the city to receive this recognition.
"This is the time of year that people are thinking about and have planned vacations, or are looking for that next getaway," she said.
San Antonio is the only destination in Texas and, with Myrtle Beach South Carolina, the only destination in the South or Southwest to be nominated.
Matej says the recognition of being good for teens will also make teenagers think their hometown does not suck, like most teenagers feel, and will encourage local families to check out destinations close to home.
"We always talk about local visitation, that people need to enjoy their own city," she said.
The nomination cites boat rides on the Riverwalk, the Spurs, the theme parks, and the Rampage.
San Antonio is holding its own in the public voting. Right now, we're third, behind Orlando and Wisconsin Dells.
The final results will be announced August 24...just in time for teenagers to head back to school.
