Police on Guard As Fiesta Begins

Local law enforcement agencies are getting ready for Fiesta too. San Antonio Police Chief Bill McManus held a roll call at the Alamo last night for city and county officers signing on officially for Fiesta duty.

McManus says while they want
everyone to enjoy Fiesta ...
they don't want them drunk
and driving.

Councilman
David Medina says it's a yearly
challenge.

"DWI is a serious problem affecting
San Antonio. In 2012, SAPD officers
made over 6,700 arrests for DWI,"
said Medina last night.

McManus pointed to one officer who
lost a leg because of a driver's crime.

"For those who don't know Michael
Thorton, let me introduce him. Two years
ago, Michael lost his leg arresting a drunk
driver. Now, he is with the DWI unit," said McManus.
