Passerby Rescues Two From South Side Fire

A quick thinking passerby is credited with rescuing two people from their burning home on the city's south side early this morning, 1200 WOAI news reports.

About midnight, Jesse Martinez was driving to his mom's home in the 9500 block of Wikieup, which is just off the Poteet-Jourdanton Freeway, when he saw flames shooting out of the window of a home.

Martinez told 1200 WOAI news he didn't even think, he just ran up and started trying to roust the residents.

"When I was banging on the door, that's when the lady came out," Martinez said.  "She didn't even know there was a fire, but the flames were getting bigger and bigger."

After that woman realized what was happening, she and Martinez ran back into the home to rescue the woman's mother.

"I went back to get the lady and the mom," he said.  "By then you couldn't see nothing.  It was full of smoke."

Police and firefighters shortly arrived and put out the fire.  The house was severely damaged, with damages estimated at about $20,000.
