Businesswoman and politician novice Shirley Gonzalez ousted west side Councilman David Medina in Saturday's runoff...making Medina the second incumbent to be sent packing in the low turnout municipal elections.
Medina was endorsed by Mayor Julian Castro, which makes the runoff a rare loss for San Antonio's Mayor.
Medina also led the charge against the proposal adding sexual orientation to the city's anti discrimination laws, prompting gay and lesbian rights activists to actively join the Gonzalez campaign
But, despite her newbie status, Gonzalez was backed by former Bexar County Democratic Party Chairwoman Choco Meza, a long time Cisneros family ally.
On the northwest side, Trinity University employee Ron Nirenberg defeated civil engineer Rolando Briones in a runoff to succeed Reed Williams, who is retiring.
Williams and popular Bexar County Commissioner Kevin Wolff had endorsed Briones.
