Local Contractors Report Worker Shortages

At a time when jobs are still scarce, the San Antonio Associated General Contractors said today that eight out of every ten local construction firms report having trouble finding qualified craft workers, and the labor shortages will only get worse, 1200 WOAI news reports.

"In Texas, 87% of firms predict craft worker shortages will continue, while San Antonio companies are unanimous," AGC executive vice president Doug McMurray said.

McMurray also said that with construction booming again in this region, there are not enough available qualified workers to meet expected increases in construction activity.  83% of local contractors report facing shortages.

Mc Murray held his news conference at Construction Careers Academy, a magnet school at Warren High School in the Northside ISD.

"CCA is an example of one of the things we need to do more of, not just in San Antonio, but throughout the county and the state," he said.

The construction industry is also calling for any immigration reform bill to remove 'arbitrary caps' on construction workers that were included in a previous immigration bill.
