Incarnate Word Officer Kills Unarmed Student

A 23 year old University of the Incarnate Word student from Baytown was shot and killed today by an on-duty campus police officer following a traffic stop on Broadway, 1200 WOAI news reports.

Alamo Heights Police say Cameron Redus was pulled over by the officer when he was 'traveling at a high rate of speed' down Broadway.

"During contact with the suspect driver, a struggle ensued betwen the suspect driver and the UIW police officer," Alamo Heights Police said in a statement.  "During the struggle, the UIW police officer discharged his service weapon striking the suspect driver several times."

The shooting took place in the parking lot of the Treehosue Apartments off Broadway.  Police didn't say why the officer felt obligated to fire 'several times' at an apparently unarmed 23 year old.  The officer has been identified as Cpl. Chris Carter, who officials say has 'an extensive law enforcement background.'

The incident happened more than half a mile from the University.  University President Lou Agnese said his police officers have the authority to patrol on all of UIW's nine campuses.

"Our thoughts and our prayers go out to the families of the student and the officer involved in this incident" Agnese said.

Agnese said Cpl Carter has been placed on paid adminstrative leave.

Alamo Heights Police and the Texas Rangers are investigating.
