EXCLUSIVE: Commemorative Air Force Eyeing Move to SA

The Commemorative Air Force, which collects, maintains, and displays World War Two and Cold War era aircraft, is considering Kelly USA, the Port San Antonio location which is on the former Kelly Air Force Base, as its new headquarters, 1200 WOAI news has learned.

CAF CEO Stephan Brown says the unit, which until twenty years ago was known as the Confederate Air Force, is not abandoning its long time home in Midland, but he told 1200 WOAI's Morgan Montalvo the goal is to move to the 'air base concept,' where more people will be able to attend CAF events.

"The next bit of the strategy that the Board of Directors decided to do is to form a CAF National Airbase, where we will take our headquarters and put it into a metro area of a million or more," Brown said.  "That way we can impact many more human beings, both through natural population, and for tourists."

The CAF fleet of classic aircraft like B-17s and B-24s is one of the largest in the world.  The CAF regularly appears at airshows, hangar dances, and major aviation events like the annual aviation show in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Brown says having its headquarters in a city with a rich aviation past like San Antonio would be a huge enhancement to the group's visibility.

"We are looking at a target date to make a decision by the first quarter of next year," Brown said.  "Then we would have to determine what sorts of facilities they have available and what sorts of facilities we would have to construct, that would be how we would make a determination about when we would actually move."

Brown says San Antonio is one of six Texas cities which are currently preparing proposals to attract the CAF.

Brown says CAF airplanes are now located in about sixty different cities around the country.  The museum in Midland will remain, but the operations and paid staff of about ten will relate to the new National Headquarters.
