Councilwoman Absent From Today's Meeting---Because She Was Having a Baby!

It isn't often you can use the phrases 'blessed event' and 'city council' in the same sentence, but San Antonio Councilwoman Shirley Gonzalez wasn't at today's meeting..because she was occupied elsewhere..giving birth to a baby boy.

Gonzalez, who was elected to council in a June runoff and represents the west side District Five, delivered a 4 pound 9 ounce baby boy, Ian Andrew Barton.

"This is an extremely emotional and jubilant experience for Kevin and me," Councilwoman Gonzalez said.  "We have been waiting for this little bundle of joy and he is simply adorable."

Gonzalez' husband is retired Chief Master Sergeant Kevin Barton.

The couple runs Bill's Pawn Shop, which was started by Ian's grandmother Eloise Gonzalez 52 years ago.

Mayor Castro took time out from the City Council meeting to congratulate the councilwoman.

"The San Antonio City Council sends heartfelt congratulatory greetings to our colleague, Shirley, and her husband Kevin on the birth of their son," he said.  "We are equally proud to have the first sitting council member to give birth to a baby."
